The most historic deal in the Trucking Union (Teamsters) passed this last month promising dramatic wage increases to UPS drivers. Some reports are showing that between hourly pay, overtime, and benefits, drivers could be making close to $170,000 a year. 

The new contract will bring significant benefits and protections for UPS Teamsters, such as:

  • Historic wage increases. Full time workers at UPS can get paid up to $49 per hour and part-time workers will be paid up to $21 per hour 
  • More full-time jobs.  The new contract will create at least 10,000 new full-time jobs over the next five years. This will help address the driver shortage issue that has been plaguing the trucking industry for years.
  • Workplace improvements and protections. The new contract will include provision such as air conditioning in every package car by 2025, a ban on using drones, driverliess vehivles, or ther tecnology to displace workers, a grievance procedure for harassment and excessive overtime, improved safety and health standards, stronger subcontracting language, and enhanced pension and health care benefits. 

The UPS-Teamsters contract will have a significant impact on the trucking industry at large, as it will set a new standard for pay, benefits, rates, and hiring in the package delivery sector. Other companies, such as FedEx, Amazon, DHL, and USPS, will have to compete with UPS to attract and retain qualified drivers and workers.
